The Gulf Islands are located in the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the Pacific coast of mainland British Columbia. The southern Gulf Islands form part of an archipelago that also includes the San Juan Islands in the United States. BC Ferries provides transportation service to many of the Islands and some can also be reached by regular float plane service. Because of the rich diversity of the area, in 2003 the Canadian Government formally recognized the importance of the Gulf Islands and has designated a portion of the area as a National Park Reserve to protect the area’s unique ecosystem.

Not only is Salt Spring Island the largest of the Gulf Islands, it is also the most populated and most visited. It has a permanent population of approximately 10,500 that swells with the 180.000 visitors who come annually to explore it each year. Known for its relaxed lifestyle emphasizing an appreciation of nature, the arts and culture, Salt Spring is renowned for it’s creativity, and health and wellness and is named as one of North America’s best art towns.

Salt Spring Island’s shoreline offers rocky shores, tidal pools and shell beaches as well as sandy beaches, many suitable for swimming. The land is mountainous with valleys of picturesque rolling pastures, deciduous forests, vineyards and fertile farmland. There are eight freshwater lakes providing fishing and swimming. Salt Spring also has two golf courses. The Salt Spring Island Golf and Country Club is a 9 hole, 3100 yards par 36 course open year round and picturesque Blackburn Meadows Golf Club, a links style 9 hole course, is Canada’s first organically built and maintained course.
